The playground is a representation of her dedication to the Salvation Army’s mission of improving lives.

Twenty-year-old guitar prodigy and singer Solomon Hicks - known by some fans in Harlem as “King Solomon,” “‘lil B.B.” or “East Montgomery” — has been playing guitar for 14 years. After 2 years of songwriting and recording with his producer/manager, Jeff Levine (a Joe Cocker veteran musical director and keyboardist), his long-awaited new album entitled “Carrying on the Torch of the Blues” is finally out on the Organic Recordings™ label. It includes a blues rendition of Lennon/McCartney’s “I Saw Her Standing There.” Levine learned “With a Little Help” from the best of how to twist an arrangement to a Beatles song! Although the song was new to a 17-year-old Solomon, :) he quickly learned how to make it his own! 

Special guest Southside Johnny plays harmonica on the cover version of “Homework," a roots classic first made popular by Otis Rush and then The J.Geils Band. Says Southside, “When I was young and starting out, certain people helped me, I’m happy to do the same for Solomon.”

Also featured is Jake Clemons, a solo artist and (current member of Bruce Springsteen’s E. Street Band) playing saxophone on the title track, "Carrying on the Torch of the Blues.” Levine used to play keyboards with his uncle, the legendary Clarence Clemons, and called on Jake for personal sentimental reasons to solo on this song. Jake definitely carries the “Big Man’s” Torch!

The album's first single, “Fooling Around," was released on May 15 and is also available for download at the Organic Recordings Music Store, as well as iTunes and CD Baby worldwide. Watch Out! An artist like Solomon Hicks comes along once in a Blues Moon!! 

Solomon is also the lead guitarist with the All Stars Band–a position he’s held since age 13! He performs several times a week with them at the legendary Cotton Club. The track “Jukin’ at the Cotton Club” was written by Freddie Salem and Solomon. Jeff Levine then scored and orchestrated an uptempo arrangement (ala Brian Setzer’s rendition of “Jump, Jive and Wail”) for The All Stars Band which they currently perform every Monday. It is so well received he then recorded the song for this album. This track will surely make you put on your dancing shoes!

Back in the studio with Morning Joe Scarborough to record two songs: “Crazy World” and “LA Song” at Sear Sound.

1989 Presidential Inaugural R&B Concert - One of the all-time best concerts of classic blues, soul and rhythm & blues was also one of the unlikeliest. It happened during the 1989 Presidential
inauguration ceremonies for George H.W. Bush, whose own tastes ran more to Frank Sinatra and Randy Travis. But somehow it happened anyway, with a lineup that included, for starters, Albert Collins, Bo Diddley, Chuck Jackson, Eddie Floyd, Sam Moore, Stevie Ray and Jimmie Vaughan, Percy Sledge, Koko Taylor, Billy Preston and Carla Thomas. It was also filmed and recorded, and 25 years later one of its organizers, attorney Howell Begle, has finally packaged it for release. This concert was recently shown on PBS television and there is to be a DVD release with more footage. I was lucky to have performed with the great blues-man, songwriter/producer Willie Dixon. I am very excited to learn that this was archived and now released. Hat’s off to Producer Howell Begle for doing this.

Jeff was recently at Quad Recording Studio in NYC recording Katie Holmes for her upcoming film Miss Meadows. James Hartnett was assistant engineer. Music Supervisor: Mason Cooper.

During the 1990’s, Jeff was a resident engineer at Quad Recording Studio and also had his studio located within the building. 

January, 2014 - CLARENCE CLEMONS DAY ON THE JERSEY SHORE, PART II
"The night truly belonged to Bowen [left] and his Red Bank Rockers. It was clear that many had come just to see this seminal Shore band (several of the evening’s performers, including Nick and a beaming Vini Lopez, could also be seen in the audience), who were reuniting after 30 years for this celebration of their bandleader Clarence Clemons. Keyboardist Jeff Levine (who later anchored John Eddie's touring band) led the band through a heart-stopping set of classic '60s soul (punctuated, of course, by the Springsteen- penned "Savin' Up,"), including Wilson Pickett's "634-5789" and "Mustang Sally" and Sam and Dave's "Soul Man," and finishing up with a floor-shaking, rafters-rocking "Can't Turn You Loose" (Otis Redding). And as always, the slow-building intensity of J. T. Bowen's powerhouse rendition of Redding's "Try a Little Tenderness" midway through the set raised the roof. In black from head to toe, and sporting a pair of alligator patterned black patent leather shoes that glowed with reflected neon light, Bowen was a whirlwind of soul-shouted energy. "It was great to see some of my old friends last night," he said today, "I haven’t seen some of these guys in years."

Carrying on the Torch of the Big Man! - Jake Clemons

Jeff performed with Solomon Hicks for a taping of one of two segments for The Big Joe Henry Variety Show. It's a show filled with comedians, illusionists, and other world class music acts. It was in front of a live audience at Tim McLoone's Supper Club in Asbury Park, NJ. Jeff played with Pat Guadagno’s house band which also backed Southside Johnny for the second segment. George McMorrow of Cinecall Productions directed the shoot. The shows will first start to air in Philadelphia and then in April, in New York on ME TV's new affiliate Channel 3 and all the subsequent cable systems, Sunday nights 7-8 pm for an additional 26 million homes. Big stuff. Big Joe has the number-one-rated radio show on New Jersey 101.5 , the ME TV network affiliates and local newspaper The Asbury Park Press.

Last night with Gregg Allman backstage at BB King Club, NYC @ Billy F. Gibbons show featuring Martin Guigui, Will Lee, Anton Fig and Mike Flanigin. Reminiscing when we first met in 1975 when he and then-wife Cher walked into the Troubadour in Los Angeles when I was playing with the Chambers Brothers. I remember I was very excited that night to also meet the late beautiful Minnie Riperton escorted by the great Bill Withers! "Those were the good old days." 

...But so, wasn't last night!

Recalling Mandela's 70th birthday tribute concert in June, 1988:

I wish I remembered better who else was on stage with Joe and me (it wasn't our regular band), with H.B. Barnum, Willie Mitchell, Jody Linscott (percussion), Nathan East (bass), David Sandborn (alto sax). If anyone recognizes any of these players, I would like to know.

June 11, was not the date as stated on Wikipedia. It had to be June 4; I know this because the next morning on the 5th, I was on the first flight out of Heathrow to attend my late brother Alan’s wedding to Beth Shear in Newton, MA. The 6 hour time difference made it possible for me to attend. I cut it pretty close returning early on the 6th for Spain but made it before showtime. The whole thing was a blur, but I will forever celebrate their anniversary date!

I remember thinking then how old Mr. Mandela was at 70. It blows my mind to think he outlived my brother who got robbed from his life just 8 days ago at an age 41 years younger than Nelson. R.I.P.

Chicago comes to NYC and it was some nasty grooves. Great to get to play with Country Boy Shawn Pelton, Mr B3 Jeff Levine, Lickmeister Wayne Baker Brooks, and the Legendary Lonnie Brooks. — with Wayne Baker Brooks and Jeff Levine, Roz Brown. This was at Sear Sound in November of 2013. A recording for a soulful song Morning Joe Scarborough wrote.

May 2, 2013 - Jeff paid a visit to the Clubhouse in Rhinebeck, NY to record keyboards for singer/songwriter Lucy Bo on her upcoming songs “Moments of Grace” and “Big Ideas,” written by Bo and Dean Bastone. In addition to Jeff’s contributions on piano, organ and Wurlitzer piano, both tracks featured Jim Weider on guitar, Gary Burke on drums and Art Coleman on bass. The sessions were produced by Dean Bastone and engineered by Paul Antonell.

Jeff is currently producing an album for singer/guitarist Solomon Hicks. Two of his latest tracks can be heard here at The Music Store, or on CD Babyand iTunes.

Jeff first heard Solomon Hicks play at legendary jazz guitarist Melvin Sparks’ memorial at the Cotton Club. Flabbergasted by the uncanny resemblance between the teen guitarist’s fretwork and Melvin’s own sound, Jeff heard in Solomon “the future of jazz and blues.” Eventually Jeff learned, unsurprisingly, that Melvin had mentored the young talent, and after meeting Solomon’s mother Holly - the “Mom-ager,” as she calls herself - Jeff invited the Hicks’s out to the studio for a creative conference. For career guidance, Jeff called upon the one person he felt was “perfect” for the job: guitarist Freddie Salem. Friends since they were both 20-years-old (they first met during Freddie’s stint in The Chambers Brothers, before he left to join The Outlaws and subsequently start a solo career) Jeff and Freddie have collaborated on many projects over the course of their friendship, with Jeff on engineering duties. Together they formed Sa-Le-Vi Management, with the focus of advancing Solomon’s career.

Recently I went to see Felix Cavaliere perform at a local club in Asbury Park, NJ. I was reminded of the first time I saw Felix playing and singing in front of a Hammond B3 organ with The Young Rascals, opening for The Dave Clark Five at Boston Garden. After hearing his burning solo in “Good Lovin’” I immediately sold my Vox Continental (a mistake; I later acquired two others) to get me a B3 and a Leslie speaker cabinet. Much later, circa ’98, I was lucky to play a series of East Coast dates with Felix in The British Rock Symphony, featuring Peter Frampton, Leslie West, Phoebe Snow and Zak Starkey on drums. He remains one of the most soulful blue-eyed cats out there! His work was a huge inspiration to me and remains an important beat in my musical heart.

Light of Day's funds raised are donated to help the fight against Parkinson's disease and related illnesses by funding research into better treatments, cures and support for patients suffering from Parkinson's disease and related illnesses.

My dear friend Eilene Cohhn introduced me to Pete Bennett when she was organizing the IDA event back in 2007 (see below). September 17, 18, 19 Jeff was in the Studio at The Clubhouse in Rhinebeck, NY with Producer Jim Weider. 11 songs were cut for singer/songwriter Lucy Bonilla.
Along with Jim on guitar, the band also featured Mitch Stein: guitar, Lionel Cordew: drums, Steve Lucas: bass. Paul Antonell and Nick Brough were behind the console.

Jeff will be touring this summer throughout Europe with The Willy Deville Trio (Willy formerly of Mink Deville), including David Keyes on upright bass (see gig schedule for show dates). The Trio is currently in rehearsal at the Gibson Guitar/Baldwin Piano showroom, formerly the historic Hit Factory Studios. A few select dates in the states to be added for August.

On June 7th, the IFC Center in New York City will host an exclusive screening of the movie "The Drug Years". Jeff played on the soundtrack for this film. Original music by Matt Hauser/Big Foote Music. Premieres on VH1 June 12 at 9:00 p.m.

Jeff is subbing for Dave Keyes on a new Broadway musical called Hot Feet. It is a collaboration between musician Maurice White of the legendary R&B group Earth, Wind and Fire and choreographer Maurice Hines.
Jeff is playing piano on the current Charles Schwab TV commercials recorded at Big Foote Music, NYC.
Jeff will serve as pianist/musical director for singer/songwriter/actor Joey Gian at the upcoming Humane Society's Genesis Awards VIP party to be held at the Beverly Hilton, Beverly Hills, CA on 3/18/06. The party will honor Genesis Awards founder actress Gretchen Wyler. The other musicians on the date will include Jaared on saxophone and John Leftwich on Bass.
C. Lanzbom of Soul Farm and singer/songwriter Dov Rosenblatt were recently in the Organic Sounds studio working with Jeff on Organ O-dubs for their new collaboration.

Jeff forms new trio - ? On Bass!

It was a chance pairing in 2005 that matched East Coast session heavies Jeff Levine and his longtime friend and drummer Jerome "Bigfoot" Brailey with world renowned guitarist Leo Nocentelli of The Meters for a week long run of gigs at the Boarding House in San Francisco. The trio instantly gelled and it was apparent that the chemistry of the whole was not only significantly greater than the sum of its parts, it was worthy of being bottled up and delivered to the public. Prior to that hit, Levine and “Bigfoot” Brailey first worked together as bandmembers with the famed Chambers Brothers, touring around the world with the rock and soul legends.

The concept of the new group is to hit the stage and play helLafied, fUnkaFied, PychaDeliSized, Rock'n Soul GrooVe JAMs!! 

Nocentelli, the marquis name of the three, has spent his recent years in the San Francisco area gigging occasionally with his own outfit and as of recent, teaming up with former Meters cohorts Porter, Modeliste, and Neville for a select batch of Meters shows around the country. Hammond B-3 ace Levine has paid his dues over the last 20 years performing and arranging with the likes of Joe Cocker, Hall & Oates, Buddy Miles Express and Bo Diddley. In addition, he has garnered a reputation as a "first call" session player in most of New York's busiest studios. Drummer "Bigfoot" Brailey has staked his claim as one of the funkiest in the business as the hitter behind the kit for the likes of Parliament-Funkadelic, James Blood Ulmer, his solo group, Mutiny and the Five Stairsteps, and countless other funk and soul units. Brailey was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998 with his fellow funksters from Parliament-Funkadelic. The band is closing in on naming a bass player (? on Bass) to round out this slammin’ quartet of seasoned groove masters. The quartet digs deep into its funk, soul and jazz roots and delivers a thick slice of groove-based material that positions them front-and-center with the likes of Medeski, Martin & Wood, Soulive and others who stand tall in the funk, roots, jazz and jam cosmos. This musical plate has been ordered many times, but never has it been put on table with such precision, taste and measure.

Collectively, Levine, Nocentelli and Brailey bring to the table nearly a century of experience on the professional circuit. It is that level of professional maturity and fortitude that makes this an act that will not only appeal to the jam crowd but promises to gratify music lovers in general. 

On March 4, photographer Rick Gilbert did a photo shoot of Jerome, Leo and Jeff in NYC at the Buckingham Hotel. A new press kit and upcoming shows are in the works.

An end-of-year CD release of Children's music by singer/songwriter Miss Sherri of Honey Child Music, Red Bank, NJ. Jeff produced and arranged 5 of the Songs, recorded and mastered at Organic Sounds. The independent judging panel of Parent To Parent, a non-profit group that identifies products of outstanding quality in family values, awarded Jelly Belly Boogaloo its “Best 2005 Musical Education CD”, Parent To Parent Adding Wisdom Award. Jelly Belly Boogaloo, co-written by Sherri Ehrlich and Jeff Levine.
Jeff is currently working on his own CD project of Soul/Jazz Organ Grooves.
